One of the most satisfying moments of the New Year has been the announcement of a knighthood for Michael Parkinson, and the most satisfied recipient of the news must have been Sir Michael himself. After years of denouncing it, he will have been delighted to see that at last the honours system has got things right.

And about time too. A man of Sir Michael's standing - or rather, a man of his sitting and listening to other more famous people - deserves all he can get from the rest of us. He needs the credit, the approbation, as well as the huge amounts of money.
