TThe Macworld Conference is the Apple event of the year - CEO Steve Jobs's opportunity to pull rabbits from hats in front of a fanatical crowd. On Tuesday, with expectations high after his 2007 iPhone announcement, he talked for an hour before pausing to pull an unfathomably paper-thin laptop from a manila envelope. Say hello to the Macbook Air... the thinnest laptop computer in the world, at just 0.76 of an inch at its fattest point, and 0.16 at its thinnest.

Up until then, the 2008 keynote speech was all about

 

consolidation and improvement. iTunes will move into film rentals. The iPhone's maps programme gets GPS-style location tracking, using information from mobile phone masts and Wi-Fi hotspots. The iPod Touch takes a step closer to becoming a fully- fledged PDA, with mail, notes

and other software.

And the Apple TV (not actually a TV, but a little computer that wirelessly connects your computer to your television so you can watch your iTunes content on a big screen) finally cuts the umbilical cord and connects to the internet independently, so you can use
