Super Tuesday : state-by-state results
DEMOCRATS
Although Hillary Clinton won only nine states against Barack Obama's 13, Clinton has the larger states in the bag, including California, New York, New Jersey. This has given her a greater overall number of delegates - currently estimated at 582 to 562 - who will vote at the party convention in August.
The closeness of the race means that neither Clinton nor Obama is likely to be declared the winner even after upcoming primaries in March, and that the race will go all the way to the convention.
The sweetest victory for Clinton was probably Massachusetts, which she won despite the veteran Senator Ted Kennedy endorsing her rival.

REPUBLICANS
John McCain has stormed ahead in his bid to win the US Republican nomination but his rivals Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee did better than predicted in many polls and there can be no coronation yet.
McCain has bagged New York, New Jersey, Missouri, Connecticut, Delaware, and his home state of Arizona - states in which the Republican winner takes all the delegates rather than a proportion. He is also projected to have won the big prizes of California and Illinois, plus Oklahoma.
Mitt Romney took Massachusetts and Utah (90 per cent of voters in the Mormon state fell in behind their man) plus five others. Mike Huckabee took five states, including Georgia where he just pipped McCain by two per cent.
