Hard news

Every year, the World Press Photo awards give due recognition to those jobbing photojournalists whose work serves today's media. It's a contest which hands out prizes to dozens of international photographers, in various categories such as Sport, Contemporary Issues and News, for the best pictures taken during the previous year. Announced earlier this month, the 2008 prize-winning images (including Tim Hetherington's Photo of the Year) will be shown in over 100 locations worldwide in a touring exhibition lasting throughout the year. They form quite a slideshow which, as you might expect, doesn't always make for comfortable viewing.
