At the memorial service for Mo Mowlam last winter, one of the most moving tributes came from her friend and former Cabinet colleague, Clare Short.
The tribute moved Mo's bereaved husband Jon Norton (right, with Clare Short), who had become a painter after losing his job as a merchant banker. He saw in Clare Short the same irreverence and iconoclasm that had drawn him to Mo before she discovered her brain tumour.
Short had been been through her own tragic loss of a partner. Her husband, the former Labour minister Alex Lyon, died in 1993 after a lengthy period suffering Alzheimer's disease.
