the deal, Radler pleaded guilty to one fraud charge and will receive 29 months in jail. In return, he has been co-operating with prosecutors on his knowledge of Lord Black's business affairs.
Another key witness will be Richard Breeden, a former chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. He led an internal Hollinger probe in 2004 that alleged in a 500-page report that Lord Black had run "a corporate kleptocracy".
THE DEFENCE
Lord Black's defence will be headed by Edward Greenspan, a high-profile Toronto lawyer known for his cutting cross- examinations and colourful courtroom style. Greenspan has had numerous big cases in Canada before, but this will be a much larger stage. Joining him is Edward Genson, a well- known Chicago lawyer who has defended mobsters, politicians and celebrities. The two know each other well. Greenspan's daughter, Julianna, worked at Genson's firm for five years after graduating from law school. She is also working on Black's case. |

THE PROSECUTION
The prosecution will be directed by Patrick Fitzgerald, the US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Fitzgerald solidified his reputation as one of the toughest prosecutors in the US recently by securing a perjury conviction against US vice-presidential aide Lewis 'Scooter' Libby. While he probably won't have in-court duties, Fitzgerald will likely be close by offering strategic advice.
THE JUDGE
Overseeing the trial is judge Amy St Eve, one of the youngest federal court judges in the US. Appointed in 2002 at the age of 36, Judge St Eve's legal background is largely as a prosecutor. But she has quickly gained a reputation for fairness and for running a well-organised court. In a 2005 interview with the Toronto Globe and Mail, her father Raymond described his daughter this way: "She's only 5ft tall and takes after her mother. She's sweet, she uses good language, she's demure. You'd never guess that out of this little squirt comes a fistful of dynamite."
