Although the Mormon Church renounced polygamy in 1890, up to 40,000 people of different faiths reportedly practice it in the US. So will Big Love do for them what The Sopranos did for mobsters?

HBO, famous for shining its megawattage on fissures of society that exist largely in the shadows, is currently airing a 12-part dark comedy depicting polygamists in Salt Lake City, Utah. Like many middle-class residents there, the Henricksons of Big Love live in a quiet suburb characterised by look-alike tract houses with tidy lawns.

Less tidy are their lives.
