Killed by his friends for a mobile phone

An 11-year-old is the latest victim of a crimewave driven by consumerism, says bhaskar gautam

As the southern city of Chennai (the new name for Madras) was celebrating Boxing Day with cakes and carols, and marking the Tamil-Hindu holy month of Margazhi with Vedic hymns, an 11-year-old boy called Aravind Karthikeyan was murdered.

Three of his own friends, aged between 15 and 17 years of age, lured him to an empty house in the city's western suburbs and killed him. They wrapped his body in a bed-sheet, took it to a desolate spot behind a Hindu temple and hid it in the bushes.

The teenagers had not planned to murder Aravind. They wanted to kidnap him and get a ransom of
