Big in Japan

There's a crazed, tripped-out, swirling landscape thing going on in Robert Platt's new paintings. He's a young UK artist now resident in Japan, and you can see Japanese themes in his work. Really, though, he adopts an international landscape style (think Peter Doig) which has now reached the point of having certain recognisable conventions. Giving hallucinogenically pleasurable visual overload is one of them, as are ideas of eco-chaos (lost and damaged Edens), and among these there are also hints of an ironically retro and ambiguous human presence. Platt scores highly in all areas - especially the pleasurable bit - so go see.
