Sketches of life

These works by Italian artist Giuseppe Caccavale stand back from the hustling, bustling craziness of full-on contemporary art. Unusually, some are fresco paintings, and some are even on glass. They're highly crafted, have a quiet, meditative detachment and depict humble subjects - a dog, a fish, some boys wrestling. If they were food, they'd be a simple peasant dish made from the best, freshest ingredients - and served for top-dollar at a fine metropolitan restaurant. There are inherent contradictions in all this, of course, but we'll forget them and just enjoy the artist's creation of a calming, beneficent mood.
