Post-nuptial depression is the latest neologism to be coined by relationship experts in search of a syndrome. Weddings are now so elaborate and expensive, the theory goes, that married life itself is an anticlimactic morning after the night before. Bride and groom face each other over the breakfast table hungover and frowsty, and wonder, “What have we done?”. Well, plus ca change. It’s well known that the first year of marriage is hell, which is why you’re not allowed to start divorce proceedings until after your 12-month anniversary. At least today’s couples get to play at keeping house together before they sign up for life.
