The baby-stealing bureaucrats

After decades in which children languished in care because of a PC predjudice against adoption, a new scandal is brewing. According to Lib Dem MP John Hemming, who tabled an Early Day Motion on the subject in January, children under four are being removed from their parents by councils on entirely spurious grounds in order to meet government targets for adoption from care.

If this is true, it doesn’t entirely surprise me. Intervention by social services is not as rare as you might think: I know three families personally who came to their attention for various reasons (bump

on the head, messy divorce, aggressive older child) and the possibility that their child might be wrongly taken away was very real.

It’s obligatory to remark at this point that most social workers ‘do a great job’. But the ones my friends dealt with combined stupidity and incompetence with a malicious pleasure in the power they were able to wield. Power, after all, is an attractive commodity; and how much easier it is to access intoxicating quantities of the stuff in the ‘caring professions’ than by climbing the greasy pole of politics or business.
