What’s the real cost per wear?
Here at SGHI we are not so frivolous as to be unaware of Stern, climate change and the ramifications thereof. And in the same week his report is published comes news that cheap-as-chips suppliers of clothing Primark, Asda, Tesco and New Look between them account for £1 out of every £4 we spend on our wardrobes.
May I therefore propose the launch of the Slow Shopping Movement. Slow Food champions high-quality, local produce and the pleasures of the table; Slow Shopping would shun the instant gratification of throwaway tat in favour of home-grown, well-made

British clothing. More expensive, yes, but lovingly crafted and designed to be worn for years not minutes. If there are air miles for food, there must be air miles for clothes produced in China, not to mention the resources used in making and then disposing of our worn-once kit.
SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT
I’m as guilty as the next woman of the feel-good ‘because I’m worth it’ speed-purchase; but from now on I’m going to try very hard to consume a little less and re-use a little more.
