When did offices become no-talk zones?

Email and text are not only the last word in connectivity but also suit shy people who fear face-to-face or voice-to-phone interaction. What we didn’t realise is that they would also make offices as quiet as the grave. Just as mobiles have robbed office workers of what was once an inalienable perk (ie using office facilities to organise social life and book holidays) so emails have made difficult phone calls more embarrassing than ever. Need to fire your nanny or get your bikini line waxed? All will be audible above the tap tap tap of the keyboard. I predict the return of the private telephone booth.
