BIMBO OR BITCH?

Over in the US, fired Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has just published her memoirs, slamming the old boy network, the criticism she took for being too ambitious to have babies and the way Silicon Valley’s chat rooms described her either as a bimbo or a bitch. I can’t imagine bimbos get very far in business, but do you need to be a bitch?

Extremely successful people tend not to make lovely, empathetic, fascinated-in-you ideal dinner guests. It’s because, as any fule kno, after a certain point getting ahead is more about having a big swinging dick than professional excellence. Once

they’ve weeded out the obvious duffers, the corporate jungle requires you spend more time doing gladiatorial combat in meetings than accomplishing your job. And time-consuming, show-offy meetings were invented for men with too much time on their hands, not nice, normal, multi-tasking women itching to get the job done so they can go home/to the sales/to the nearest wine bar.

So to climb the greasy pole, do you have to be a power-hungry, hard-as-nails bitch? Probably. Just like all the other CEOs in the room.
