Mad hatters

Fans of Joel-Peter Witkin's elaborate photographs are used to seeing macabre, monochrome and magnificently arranged scenes of dead or deformed bodies - but these images have a more conventional beauty. Commissioned for the New York Times Magazine, they enact a happy marriage between art and fashion - attempting to 'merge historical and contemporary aesthetics' as Witkin says - by recreating works by Rembrandt, Hopper and Picasso, and throwing in some choice millinery by Prada, Chanel and Alexander McQueen. Flicking through this series is a bit like stumbling upon a Mad Hatter's art party.
