Less expensive wine (£60 to £200 a case) is more dangerous. It is essential to go to a pre-sale tasting and try the wine yourself, preferably from more than one bottle. These tastings are also a good way of trying lots of interesting wines - and are free.

The best auctioneers in London are Christie's and Sotheby's - both have specialist wine departments and sales. Michael Broadbent, the greatest living expert on fine wine, still keeps an eagle eye on Christie's. Bonham's follow close behind.

The golden rule is to bid only for what you have earmarked beforehand - and only up to your pre-set limit. And don't bid against your father!
