Out of time
The people and places of modern San Diego are unrecognisable in these staged photographs by Eleanor Antin. They've been styled, painted and posed to replicate the Classical world after all. Antin has rifled through the rich index of Greco-Roman myths and extracted stories and allegories which she has then artfully translated into photographic tableaux. In many ways she is simply following a long line of artists who have done exactly the same thing in classical paintings, occasionally - as with Nicolas Poussin's The Triumph of Pan (1636) - even referencing them directly. In Antin's work, though, all this pagan revelry - with its distinct echoes of modern excess - is subject to her keen yet good-natured mockery.
