Harmony in Cyprus

Beauty in battle-scarred land
There are no direct flights to Turkish Cyprus, no ferry can land there and much of the countryside is in the hands of the military, or scarred by unregulated house building.
Yet there are reasons to visit this disputed territory, says Alistair Fraser in the Sunday Telegraph: pretty harbour towns, such as Girne, masses of archaeological sites (many of them unprotected), few tourists, and miles of deserted beaches.
Some of the best are on the Karpas Peninsula, where the rolling green hills are roamed by wild donkeys abandoned when their Greek owners fled south.
