Busman’s holiday

Going to the circus tends to inspire rather mixed emotions. All those creepy clowns, death-defying acts and freaky contortionists: they’re liable to scare the life out of you as much as entertain you. Such a blend of unease and fascination often sits rather uncomfortably, but this is just why Jonathan Anderson & Edwin Low find the circus an interesting subject. For this series, they took a troupe of honed, costumed and make-upped performers out of the big top and into Blackpool Pleasure Beach where they photographed them among the amusements, in a deliberately contrived and incongruous environment.
