Out of this world
First impressions of Greenland are that there's not a whole lot going on there. Isolated, barren and free from the clutter of civilisation, it has a minute population and an ice sheet covering 81 per cent of it - there is so little to report, in fact, that they have no need for a daily newspaper. But it's this very otherworldliness that has captivated Finnish photographer Tiina Itkonen. Her romantic attachment to this Ultima Thule 'goes beyond reason', she says, and to photograph it she has braved adverse weather, hostile terrains and sometimes waited days for compliant shooting conditions. Remote as it is, though, it can't escape global warming so, ultimately, Itkonen's images are a mix of both wonderment and sadness.
