Not quite photographs, not quite paintings; Teun Hocks's surrealist and humourist photo-works (such as Untitled, 2006 above) are a subtle and unpretentious blend of the two. Their formation is a painstaking process, but one that is refreshingly artisan: from abstract idea they become rough sketch, built set, Polaroid test-shots and finally a photographic print overlaid with transparent oil paint. His motivation is similarly modest and old-fashioned. Wonderfully vague, he says simply that through his work he aims to elicit a 'smile, or maybe a good feeling' - and that he certainly does.
