A 1980 photograph of Peter Mandelson, left, as chairman of the British Youth Council. On the far right is the former Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath. As a young man Mandelson briefly abandoned the Labour Party to join the Young Communist League. In 1982 he became disillusioned with politics and worked as a television producer, before rejoining the Labour Party in 1985 as Director of Communications
