Honestly brilliant

Clearly, cartoonist David Heatley is a confessional soul. Having been a solid presence in comics anthologies for years, Heatley's debut collection My Brain is Hanging Upside Down showcases a remarkable brand of unflinchingly honest autobiography. How honest? Heatley's alarmingly frank depiction of his sexual history (dating back to kindergarten) certainly sets the bar high, closely followed by a blunt examination of his own racism, his dysfunctional parents and the baffling logic of his own dreams. Don't be fooled by the deceptive simplicity of Heatley's art either. Like Gary Panter (Jimbo's Inferno), the imagery teems with detail and emotional resonance - all to be enjoyed once you've stopped blushing.
