Wild Limpopo

See SA's endangered beasts
A "visionary attempt at ecological co-operation between nations" is unfolding in southern Africa, says Stanley Johnson in the Times. Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa are working together to preserve the wildlife in a vast area straddling their borders, known as the Limpopo-Shashe Trans-Frontier Conservation Area, or the Peace Park. At its heart is the Tuli reserve, a "spectacular" sweep of mopane veld at the confluence of the Limpopo
and Shashe rivers. Most of the great mammals of southern Africa are here; they've even reintroduced wild dogs, the region's most endangered carnivores. And, because there are relatively few visitors, you can drive anywhere you like – terrain permitting – in search of them.
Discovery Initiatives (01285 643 333) offers a 10-day trip to the region from £2,925pp.
