The long journey

Black rioters rounded up by army troops who used martial law to bring order to Detroit in 1943 after race-riots left 34 dead. The riots were the result of several months' tension between whites and blacks after public housing projects for black immigrants from the south were built in predominantly white neighbourhoods. Of the 25 black fatalities, 17 were killed by police.
