Destined for greatness
Gaining in both clout and momentum as it goes, the Terry O'Neill Award returns for the second year running to showcase the depth and breadth of today's photographic talent. Among those who made it into this year's shortlist were Emma Critchley and Sophie Lewis with their elegant - and rather befuddling - underwater portraits (see page two), and Asa Johanesson, whose pin-sharp facial close-ups look both delicate and forceful (see page six). The entrant who took home the top prize of £3,000 though was Anthony Crossfield, whose manipulated images of morphing male forms (Foreign Body, 2008, above) hark back to the visceral grotesques of Francis Bacon.
