The 19-year-old swimmer from Mansfield won two golds in the Olympic pool in the 400m freestyle and 800m, breaking the world record in the latter. She endeared herself to the British public with her enthusiasm (not least for Jimmy Choo shoes). Originally an outsider she has emerged as late favourite for the BBC Sports Personality title.
