Dead mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2007. In a spate of high-profile killings, whole families of gorillas were executed with gunshots to the back of the head. However, since then, and despite the nearby war, the Congolese Mountain Gorilla population has flourished. Notorious Congolese warlord Laurent Nkunda has said, "I always tell my brothers that God provided Congo with the gorillas, and it's our duty to make sure we don't harm them"
