David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister served two terms in the period 1948-55. After the creation of the Jewish state, hundreds of thousands of Arabs were driven from their homes during the ensuing war. Many became permanent refugees, denied the right to return to their homeland. Some historians claim Ben-Gurion turned a blind eye to atrocities committed by Israeli forces and his government encouraged Jewish families to occupy "abandoned" Arab properties. He acknowledged privately that there could be "no solution" to Israel's conflict with the Arabs.
