Fred Tomaselli, Doppelganger Effect, 2004

Tomaselli’s great trip

These works were created by painting over images embedded in transparent resin - a bit reminiscent of the popular craft kits sold in the 1970s, with which hobbyists would solemnly embed things, like photographs of kittens. The artist, Fred Tomaselli, was first known for embedding actual cannabis leaves, and the stoned, cosmic theme continues in this excellent show, with a lot of intensely trippy imagery. Tomaselli's work, such as Doppelganger Effect (above) can be situated amongst earlier psychedelic illustration and design styles - Martin Sharp and, perhaps, Kit Williams - but he's also in there with the current school of psychedelic-mania that includes Chris Ofili, Jim Lambie and Peter Doig. Recommended.
