Sinister yet thoughtful
These paintings are expressive of many strange problems: extremes of unhappy physicality, death, cruel sex, sinisterly carnivalesque religion - and that's just for starters. But don't worry, it's all in the category of thoughtful art, rather than something that requires therapy. The artist, Matthew Burrows, explores the same areas and themes as other artists, but has created a specialised painterly vocabulary with which to address them, based on ideas of a bulbously curved, biomorphic bodies. Although you can endlessly checklist his possible influences - Hans Belmer, Graham Sutherland, James Ensor, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois - Burrows successfully creates a world independent of these.
