Sarkozys look at love-nest with YSL connections

Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni

Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy consider buying Yves Saint Laurent’s old apartment

FIRST POSTED MAY 14, 2009

Not content with chasing each other down the corridors of the Elysee Palace, and in and of out of the First Lady's boudoir at her townhouse in the swish 16th arrondissement, it is reported that Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni are thinking of getting themselves a love-nest across the river in the 7th arrondissement. And it's not just any old love-nest – but the Rue de Babylone apartment of the late Yves Saint Laurent.

Bruni was close friends with the fashion designer, who died last year, and she and the French president recently inspected his apartment which takes up two floors at 55 Rue de Babylone. It used to house Saint Laurent's spectacular art collection, which was sold for €373m in February. The asking price is thought to be in the region of €10m.

However, if the couple do move in, Sarkozy may not approve of all his neighbours. Among those who own flats in the block is Mick Jagger, who had a seven-year affair with Bruni, which reportedly began while his then wife, Jerry Hall, was pregnant with their third child. According to the recent autobiography of Bruni's personal assistant Franck Demules, Bruni still regards Jagger as a "God", while he has been known to attend her concerts.

The Rolling Stone has haunted Sarkozy since he first met Bruni. According to Jacques Seguela, who famously brought the pair together at a dinner party at his Paris home, she told the President: "When it comes to the celebrity press, you are an amateur. My time with Mick was secret for eight years. We went to all the world capitals and we were never photographed once."

To which Sarko responded: "How could you have stayed eight years with a man who has such ridiculous calves?" Here's hoping they don't meet on the stairs.

Neither of them has a track record of being faithful or establishing stable relationships so it will be fascinating to see who cheats first and how the other reacts!
