This iconic image of the Tiananmen Square massacre was taken on June 5, 1989, as the Chinese army regained control of Beijing after weeks of protest. The protestor, whose identity remains unknown, tried to block the tanks from progressing by dodging from side to side. After he climbed onto the first tank and spoke with its driver, he was pulled away by bystanders. Though nothing is known for certain about his fate, it is generally assumed that he was later captured and executed by the Chinese authorities.
