Tiananmen Square massacre
A crowd numbering tens of thousands at the Martyr's Monument in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on April 21, 1989. Originally, the protestors had gathered in the centre of Beijing to mourn Hu Yaobang, a pro-democracy government official, who had died on April 15. Given further impetus by the state visit of Mikhail Gorbachev, Russia's reformist leader, in May, their aim was to voice criticism of the government's authoritarianism and call for economic reforms.
