Half a million Israelis still live in illegal settlements in occupied territories. But while Barack Obama has highlighted the problem of their continued expansion as one of the biggest barriers to peace in the Middle East, Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu resolutely defends them. This was Morag, an Israeli settlement in the southern Gaza Strip, in August 2005. It was subsequently demolished by the Israeli army, like a number of others when earlier Israeli governments made concessions to Palestinians.
