Greta Scacchi latest star to save bluefin tuna

Actress Greta Scacchi is the latest celebrity to attempt to save the endangered bluefin tuna, the world's most expensive fish. The White Mischief star has posed naked while holding a dead cod for a poster campaign by photographer Ian Rankin to raise awareness of over-fishing.

Scacchi and Rankin are working with a London Japanese restaurant, Soseki, to take images of celebrities holding dead fish. Actors Emilia Fox and Richard E Grant, film director Terry Gilliam (pictured above with Fox, left, and Scacchi, right) and comedian Lenny Henry are among those who have taken part.

Soseki's approach differs from that of Nobu, the worldwide restaurant chain with branches in London. As The First Post reported recently, Nobu has been threatened with a boycott by several celebrities, including Stephen Fry and Elle Macpherson, unless it stops serving bluefin tuna. But Nobu's chef, Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, is refusing to bow to the pressure.

The Rankin campaign coincides with a new documentary, The End of the Line, released today. It is hoped reporter Charles Clover's film will raise awareness of over-fishing in the way that Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth has highlighted the risks of climate change.

Scacchi is calling on all consumers, not just celebrities, to boycott restaurants that don't support sustainable fishing. She told the Daily Telegraph: "It is shocking to hear the experts reporting that if we continue with current fishing methods – a free-for-all, largely unregulated plundering of the sea – the prediction is that within 40 years the sea will be inhabited only by worms and jellyfish."

What's their problem? If overfishing doesn't wipe out all life in the seas, increased acidity will get them, and us anyway. As one great philosopher (Dad's Army) said - "we-e-e'r-r-e all do-o-o-o-med!"
