Part fiction, part documentary, this series by Lise Sarfati takes the teenage girls of Austin, Texas and studies them with a quizzical, stylised intensity. Sarfati chose Austin in particular as a slightly skewed example of Middle America - a city that sits at the geographical centre of the US but also boasts a famously oddball character. Her lonely models ('Christy' above, 'Kate', 'Eva-Claire' et al) mill around this town looking both part of the furniture and weirdly lost, their performances perfectly pitched midway between generic glum teens and enigmatic individuals. To Sarfati, these are not straightforward portraits, but generalised studies of people, place and identity.
