‘Wasted Youth (25 Ashbourne Avenue)’, Petros Chrisostomou, 2008

Fresh photography

Aimed at plucking new talent from the cloistered world of Art College and introducing it to the commercial market, Freshfaced and Wildeyed is the nascent annual venture of The Photographers' Gallery. 2009 is only its second outing and the 23 photographers featured in the show are all recent visual arts graduates, so everyone has something to prove. And they seem to have managed it. The gallery has unearthed plenty of fresh, imaginative image-makers: Petros Chrisostomou, for example, who creates his own modern Wonderland by playing audaciously with scale (see Wasted Youth, 2008 above), and Kathryn Faulker, who asks people for their 20 most important books so as to redefine portraiture as 'literary still life'.
