Experts say the public must stop terrorists – so where are all the heroes, asks frank furedi

It is hard to get the image out of your mind. An alleged terrorist carrying a rucksack turns his back towards a mother and child just as he appears to detonate his bomb in a London underground carriage.

The CCTV footage was played this week to the jury in a trial of five men charged with terrorist offences. The footage showed people fleeing after the device explodes.

But one passenger, Angus Caldwell, an off-duty firefighter, stood his ground and confronted the alleged would-be bomber after the explosion failed to do serious damage. Described in the court as someone made of 'sterner stuff', Caldwell remonstrated with the defendant, Ramzi Mohammed, as the train continued on.

Anyone who saw it will have felt reassured by the brave and exemplary behaviour of Caldwell. But why did only one passenger
