Bent in hot water after Twitter outburst

Spurs striker is the latest sportsman to fall foul of the internet after he vents his frustration over transfer delay

LAST UPDATED 8:43 AM, JULY 31, 2009

Spurs striker Darren Bent is in hot water after posting angry messages on social networking site Twitter insulting club chairman Daniel Levy over his proposed transfer to Sunderland.

The striker, who is waiting for a £14m move to Wearside to go through, wrote: "Seriously getting p***** off now." He followed that up with: "Why can't anything be simple. It's so frustrating hanging round doing jack s***," and the more strident: "Do I wanna go Hull City NO. Do I wanna go stoke NO do I wanna go sunderland YES so stop f****** around, Levy."

He had been hauled off the plane taking his Spurs teamamates to China for a pre-season tournament but is stil waiting for the move to go through.

His outburst came on the same day that Australian cricketer Phil Hughes also blundered while using Twitter - he accidentally revealed he had been dropped from the Test side.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

George Caulkin, the Times: "The player’s attack was the culmination of a day on which the internet was the focal point of a number of sporting controversies. Phillip Hughes, the Australia batsman, was warned by officials after the news that he had been dropped from the team for the third Ashes Test against England was posted on his Twitter page, while Tranmere Rovers were up in arms after a company that they had appointed to find them a buyer put the club up for sale on eBay."

Jacob Steinberg, the Guardian: "Frustrated with how long it is taking to complete his move to Sunderland, Darren Bent has sent a foul-mouthed message to the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy via Twitter. Bent is upset that Levy is still stalling over the price Sunderland must pay to sign him, and has made his desperation to leave White Hart Lane abundantly clear."

The Daily Mail: "Bent has been waiting for the deal to be completed, having been told to get off Tottenham's flight to China on Monday. But the clubs are still haggling over the fee and Bent, under the username 'db10thetruth' appears to have used the social networking website to vent his frustration."
