Ben Foster out of England squad

Ben Foster

The Manchester United player picked up an injury during their defeat in the Community Shield match on Sunday

England have been struck by another goalkeeping crisis as Ben Foster became the latest withdrawl from Fabio Capello's squad ahead of tomorrow night's friendly international against Holland in Amsterdam.

The 26-year-old was injured in Sunday's Community Shield game at Wembley, when he underwent a torrid time in the Manchester United goal, letting in two regular time goals and four penalties.

Joe Hart of Manchester City has been drafted in to replace Foster. The 22-year-old has one cap already for England, but is unlikely to start the game, an honour likely to be given to Robert Green.

Spaniard Manuel Almunia of Arsenal, who is now a candidate for British citizenship, could also soon come into the long term picture for the national side in the run-up to the World Cup in South Africa next year.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
Nick Hoult, Daily Telegraph: "Foster's latest injury is a particular source of frustration as goalkeeper is one of the few positions in the England team that remains unsettled. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has stressed that he regards Foster as a future successor to Edwin van der Sar, although he was unconvincing in the Community Shield on Sunday and could be partially blamed for both Chelsea goals."

Oliver Kay, the Times: "This had promised to be the biggest week of Foster's career, with a broken finger suffered by Edwin van der Sar creating a two-month vacancy at Old Trafford, which in turn presented an opportunity to stake his claim to replace David James as England's first-choice goalkeeper. But an unhappy afternoon in the Community Shield - which United lost on penalties to Chelsea - on Sunday was followed by his withdrawal from the England squad to face Holland in a friendly tomorrow after suffering bruising to his right knee."

Dominic Fifield, the Guardian: "Almunia is aware that his possible selection by England, especially in a World Cup season, would be controversial. He has stressed his desire to be sensitive to the mood within English football. 'I have to see what people think because it's not an easy decision. I'm 32 so I don't want any problems with anyone. This is not a silly thing. You are playing with the hearts of people. It [an England cap] is not something you can buy in a shop. I don't want to disturb anybody. I want to make everybody happy.'"

Matt Lawton, Daily Mail: "A dearth of decent goalkeepers, decent strikers and decent cover should key individuals suffer injury or a loss of form as South Africa approaches are causing concern. Who will stand between the posts when David James is fast approaching his 39th birthday and his understudies remain so unconvincing? Is Capello relying on Sir Alex Ferguson somehow to revitalise Michael Owen and give England a second striker of true international quality after Wayne Rooney?"
