Premier League preview: will Arsenal overwhelm troubled Portsmouth?

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal have made a perfect start to the season, thrashing Everton 6-1 at Goodison Park last Saturday in a vibrant and fizzing display of attacking football and beating Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow on Tuesday in the Champions League play-off, so tomorrow's visitors Portsmouth could be in for a torrid time.

Most observers expected Pompey to be relegation candidates this season after the departures of many key players during the summer, and their opening results, a pair of 1-0 defeats by Fulham and Birmingham haven't changed that view. If Arshavin and co fire tomorrow the south coasters could be on the wrong of a humiliating scoreline.

Another club that could find themselves enduring serious punishment is Wigan, who host the champions Manchester United. The euphoria from Roberto Martinez's side's positive start to the season - beating Aston Villa 2-0 - ebbed somewhat during their midweek home defeat by Wolves, and with Alex Ferguson's men chastened by their 1-0 upset at Premier League new boys Burnley the scene is set for a backlash at the DW Stadium.

Manchester City's fans will get their first glimpse of their expensively assembled side in the Premier League this season when they host newly promoted Wolves, and Mick McCarthy's men will need to be on guard that whichever strike force Mark Hughes opts to put out, his defence are prepared for a torrid time.

Sunday sees a pair of London derbies as early season pace-setters Spurs and Chelsea are in action. Harry Redknapp returns to his old stomping ground of West Ham with the league's top-scoring side, fresh from hammering Hull 5-1 on Wednesday night, although his previous side has always played up on visits home from their former boss.

Chelsea travel to neighbours Fulham for the west London derby, a fixture that ended 2-2 last season with a brace apiece for Frank Lampard and Clint Dempsey. Roy Hodgson's side will be missing record signing Andy Johnson who is suffering from a suspected broken collarbone sustained after a brutal tackle in last night's 3-1 Europa League victory over Amkar Perm, and Carlo Ancelotti's men ought to maintain their perfect start to 2009.
