Transfer Talk: Harry Redknapp wants to bring the £13m defensive midfielder in from Brazil

With less than a week to go before the end of the summer transfer window, the clubs who make up the second tier of the Premier League are beginning to put make their final moves of the season. For Harry Redknapp at Spurs, who has only brought in two main players this window, despite being linked to everyone under the sun, a midfield enforcer is called for to provide back-up for Honduran Wilson Palacios. The club is looking to the Americas again, the Times reports, and has sent officials to Brazil to negotiate the transfer of Internacional's 20-year-old defensive midfielder Sandro. The 6ft 1in Brazil U20 international could cost up to £13m, and may necessitate the Londoners offloading Jermaine Jenas to Aston Villa...

In addition to Jenas, Martin O'Neill, who was defended by Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker as not being under pressure despite a topsy-turvy start to the season, is looking to bulk up his leaky defence. Manchester City centre back Richard Dunne is now surplus to requirements at Eastlands after the arrivals of Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure, and would be available for £6m, according to the Daily Mail. O'Neill has had to move quickly to head off interest from Everton and Sunderland, and are still looking for another defender, the likeliest target being Stephen Warnock of Blackburn and previously Liverpool...

Everton meanwhile are left to seek cover for the recently departed Lescott -whose £22m transfer finally went through yesterday - and are chasing Sylvain Distin of Portsmouth and Brede Hangeland of Fulham. Distin is believed to be a done deal, with the 31-year-old Frenchman joining the exodus out of unhappy Fratton Park for a reported £5m, the Daily Telegraph claims. A bid for Hangeland would be more optimistic, as the Norwegian committed himself to the Londoners just this weekend, and Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson would demand a fee in excess of £10m for the giant Viking...

Sir Alex Ferguson can rest easy after defensive stalwart Nemanja Vidic scotched rumours yesterday that he was seeking to leave the Old Trafford club and move to their Champions League conquerors Barcelona, the Guardian is reporting. Vidic criticised his agent Paolo Fabbri for suggesting the Serbian player wanted a move: "I've never said anything about Barcelona or Real Madrid or Milan - or any club," he said. "I never speak about my future so I don't know why someone else does. I showed at Wigan on the pitch how happy I am at this club. I spoke with my agent about this and what he said. I know about all the rumours about me but I don't want it to have an impact on the club," a reference to the summer exits from Old Trafford of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez...
