Hotel of the week: Tanjong Jara, Malaysia

Hotel of the week: a sumptuous resort on Malaysia pristine east coast

FIRST POSTED OCTOBER 14, 2009

With its "steep roofs and intricately carved fretwork", the Tanjong Jara's design is inspired by the palaces of the 17th century Malay sultans. It's doubtful, however, that they ever lived as "sumptuously" as the resort's guests, says Sholto Byrnes in The Independent.

Watersports, a gym and tennis courts are there for the active, though few make much use of them, so "beguilingly calm" is the atmosphere by the two pools and in the award-winning spa and excellent restaurant. Rooms are large and comfortable, and the location – isolated between tropical rainforest and sweeping beaches on Malaysia's "pristine" east coast – is wonderful.

Tanjong Jara (00 609 845 1100) - doubles from £268, room only.
