A man slaughters a buffalo in the village of Bariyapur, in southern Nepal, in honour of Gadhimai, the Hindu goddess of power. Since the 18th century, Gadhimai's devotees have taken part in the sacrificial festival which occurs every five years. Over the next two days up to a quarter of a million animals and birds will be killed.
