Only a grain of truth

The City of Salt was built on the whim of a desolate king. When a rebel force spread plague in his capital, the inhabitants died and looters moved in. As flying scouts surveyed the devastation, the king resolved to build a fortress to guarantee his safety.

Not really. The city is part of a fictional world dreamed up by photographers Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick - to an extraordinary degree of verisimilitude. These beautiful shots of their mythical desert land, and its strange denizens, were staged using miniature dioramas and are accompanied by narratives based on Sufi folklore. Elaine Hake
