It’s all about y
Sociologists call people born between 1982 and 1993 Generation Y, and researchers in the US have discovered that 30 per cent more of them than their equivalent age group in 1982 suffer from a condition called ‘elevated narcissism’.
Narcissists ‘lack empathy for others, are aggressive when insulted, seek public glory glory and favour self-enhancement over helping others’.
It used to be that nurturers and narcissists were divided along gender lines. Women did the caring and men did battle in the workplace. But funnily enough, the generation of young British women now outperforming
their male peers has also been dubbed Generation Y by the Observer. They are brilliant, confident and unimpressed by the husband material on offer. They are also childless - thus far.
SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT
Since narcissism can reasonably be supposed to be incompatible with functional parenthood, I predict a society divided not by gender, but by family responsibility for young or old. Highflyers without families will smash the glass ceiling, but parents and other kinds of ‘carer’ may struggle to make the sacrifices required to succeed.
