Apple challenged over iPad name

Fujitsu has already applied to trademark the name 'iPad', it warns Apple
Computing giant Apple has run up against a snag with the launch yesterday of its endlessly-anticipated iPad: it seems the name is already taken, not least by the manufacturers of a padded bra.
While it is unlikely that Canadian lingerie firm Coconut Grove will claim Apple's use of the word might infringe their rights, or that Siemens – which uses 'iPad' for automotive parts – will object, Fujitsu's use of the name is another matter. The Japanese technology firm's lawyers have been quick to point out that they have already applied to trademark the name.
Fujitsu's 'iPad' is a handheld device used to monitor stock levels in US grocery stores.
Apple's filings to the US Patent Office suggest it is likely to argue there is no overlap between the products. Apple may even go so far as to oppose Fujitsu’s right to use the name.
This is not the first time Apple has been in this situation, even if it is the first time it has come up against a lingerie manufacturer. Three years ago Apple had to negotiate a settlement with communications manufacturer Cisco to use the name 'iPhone'.
Apple's iPad has been hailed as a 'netbook killer' after its unveiling by Apple boss Steve Jobs in San Francisco, ending months of speculation about what exactly the new device would
offer.
