Ndakasi, a two-month old mountain
gorilla, is treated for dehydration in
Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.
She was found at the weekend clinging
to the corpse of her mother, who
had been shot dead. Mai Mai militia
operating in the remote Virunga Nature
Reserve are thought to be responsible.
Last month, the rebel group attacked
three rangers’ posts, killing one
officer and taking 13 hostage. They
threatened to kill the entire population
of mountain gorillas if government
forces retaliated. Virunga Reserve
is home to half of the world’s
remaining mountain gorillas
